Camp Tuto
Camp Tuto

The fact is, I was there, a couple of hours, a morning, late may 1981, we were 2 technicians, on a trip to P-Mountain, servicing the GMD 20 Wind equipment, and the weather was very nice. We were driving at the road up to P mountain, a couple of miles before Fox Canyon, the place where a jeep ran out over the side a couple of years before.Thats what we saw, the day we were there. It was between shelter # 11, and # 12. Infact it is shelter 12 we see on the picture.
There was a road to the left, and it was heading in the direction of the great land glacier. We didn’t know anything about it, so as I told you the weather was nice, and we soon agree to look after where the road was headed.

After approx. 25 min. we reach a town, build in the same prefabricated barracks, as used on TAB (Thule air Base). We found a dinning hall, a Gym, and several private quarters, they looked like the just was abandoned, also the dining hall, cups, and plates were still on the tables. Inside the Gym a huge iceberg, have made its way up trough the floor, and nearly reached the roof, some 25 feet over our heads.
It was a spooky place, so we left the building, a drove our Dodge Linetruck, up on the ramp, accessing the ice cap. I actually drove on the icecap, but not for long, it was a very heavy vehicle, and the ice, doesn’t look alright to me, so I turned the car around, and went down again, I remember that the ramp was very steep. So we headed P mountain (Pithufik mountain) again, our goal for our daily PMI.

When we later in the afternoon was back on Thule air Base, we asked several "old-timers", what the place was build for? and they told us, that the name was Camp Tuto, inspired of Thule take off, and it was a supply base for Camp Century. At that time, I decided to gather some more information about that place. But until now, I just have collected a little. But evey day, I get more and more, so you'll sit back and wait, and I will publish more details...
