Located on the northwest coast of the largest island in the world, Thule Air Base sits on the floor of an ancient glacier bed, flanked by mountains and facing North Star Bay.

Thule is actually pronounced "TOO-LUH" in Danish, but is commonly referred to as "TOO-LEE."

The name Thule is derived from the Greek "Ultima Thule" meaning "utmost end." - Early Europeans named other northern lands similarly: Northern Ireland, Scotland and Norway.

SOME GOOD ADVICES
ABOUT WILDLIFE AROUND THULE AIR BASE

Now it is time to get out of our holes and discover the surrounding areas of Thule Air Base. There, you will explore a different world with a lot of interesting things.

Beautiful flowers are growing between rocks and beneath the snow. You'll find a whole lot of beautiful rocks and stones which you can bring to the Arts & Crafts Center and make them turn out to be *jewels*. Surely, you may not find Diamonds and Gold, which, in fact, you shouldn't worry so much about. Mother Nature is always damaged when the "gold diggers" start shoveling.

Instead, take time out to study butterflies and the variety of wildlife. Do remember that the animals have the right of way, and you should not touch any of the birds' nests - in fact, no animals are to be disturbed.

FOXES: At this time foxes take care of their puppies and there is a very good chance to watch the puppies playing around with Mama Fox. However, don't try to touch the puppies as the mother is a very protective one and might become aggressive. If she shows her white teeth you can be sure that she is not smiling to you.

MUSK 0X: Yes, there is a few herds of Musk Ox in the area around Cape Atholl. However, don't get near those as they have their calves to protect and may attack any intruders. Remember the Bull in each herd will protect all of his "ladies." Normally, when a herd feel themselves endangered they will form a circle and if you should experience such a manner, you definitely ought to move your legs. Finally, please don't call them *Arctic Cows*.

POLAR BEAR: Polar bears have been observed at Camp Tuto, P. Mountain, Cap Atholl - and the area between P. Mountain and Cap Atholl. Furthermore, south of South Mountain, Saunder's Island - and, of course, at the North Star Bay.

We all know that polar bears are very dangerous - and fast. You can't run away from a polar bear. If you should be seen by such one, nothing may happen; but then again: Is the polar bear hungry? - does at have puppies? - and furthermore, does the bear feel threatened?

Never try to catch the polar bear's attention; get away from the area. What can you do if attacked by a polar bear? Some people have survived by playing dead. Other have scarred the bear away with whistles and/or spray cans with smelly odors. But, chances of seeing a polar bear or be attacked by one are very small.

SNOW SNAKES: Snow snakes are very seldom during the sunny season. However, you may observe some in snowcovered "High Mountains." lf you stand on a snow covered hill with both of your hands in your pockets, you may drop into one.
