I was at North Mountain in early 1953 when I ran the power plant there. The Radar equipment was apparently moved to P Mountain later that same year after I came off North mountain to work at the power plants on the main base.
We were the first Air Force personnel to take over and operate the base power plants when they were turned over by the Project Blue-Jay Contractors in (I think)1953. If I remember correctly, the plant to which I was assigned had 5 Ingersol-Rand Diesel powered Generators and was one of four or five plants operating in a separate "system" We were the "lead" plant. Our plant fed the Runway lights among other things. At the opposite end of the plant were large boilers that created steam for heating buildings on the base. These were operated by boiler plant operators, a separate group of Air Force guys. The noise in the plant was deafening. But I still remember the additional noise and the shaking of the power plant when a B36 bomber passed overhead. What an awesome aircraft! Thule was an experience I feel sure none of us will ever forget.....
